North Shore Road Wildlife Resources Survey
The Catena Group was contracted in 2004 to conduct surveys for 16 target species
within the proposed North Shore Road corridor in the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park in Swain County, North Carolina. A total of six weeks were spent
conducting inventories for streamside and aquatic salamanders, fish, crayfish,
freshwater mussels, butterflies, and dragonflies. Aquatic survey methods used
included electroshocking, sein netting, and snorkel surveys, Terrestrial and
semi-aquatic survey methods used were time- and area-constrained visual surveys.
Results of the survey were the documentation of 14 amphibian, 12 reptile, 27
fish, 3 crayfish, 51 butterfly, and 12 dragonfly species. Of the 16 target
species, eight were documented to occur within the proposed corridor.
Highlights
of the survey included collection of the Olive Darter (Percina squamata),
a Species of Federal Concern, an undescribed crayfish species (Cambarus sp.),
the mimic crescent (Phyciodes incognitus), a rare and newly described butterfly
species, and the rare Reversed Roadside Skipper (Amblyscirtes reversa), a
first
record for the North Carolina mountains.
